Karen Rathjens, LICSW
Clinical Supervisor
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with a specialization in working with children, adolescents, and young adults. I am passionate about incorporating sports and movement into the work that I do when clinically indicated to do so. In addition to the individual counseling I provide, I have extensive experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including educators, medical professionals, and athletic staff, to create cohesive, client-centered care. I also enjoy providing trainings and mentoring team members and fostering a culture of continuous learning. I’m committed to building resilience, emotional intelligence, and strength in my clients.

Life transitions can be exciting, but they often bring stress, anxiety, or a sense of overwhelm. Whether you’re navigating a career change, relationship shift, grief, aging, or simply striving for more balance, I provide a safe and supportive space to explore your challenges and build clarity and confidence.
I help individuals reconnect with their purpose or discover it for the first time while embracing strengths and pursuing meaningful goals. My approach combines clinical insight with intuitive guidance, drawing from CBT, DBT, ACT, SFBT, and Mindfulness. Together, we’ll work toward your “flow zone,” a space where life feels more balanced and energized.
I work alongside you to deepen self-understanding, nurture emotional well-being, and create strategies for growth and change. If you’re ready to step into your flow zone, I’d be honored to support you on the path to greater peace, balance, and fulfillment.
Caren Hunter, LCSW
Fee-for-Service Clinician
You’ve been working hard to keep up with life’s demands, but something still feels off. Maybe your energy feels drained, your focus is scattered, or your body is sending signals your mind hasn’t fully caught up with yet. You want to better understand yourself—how your physical rhythms, environment, and emotional well-being all influence one another. You’re ready to explore new ways of moving through challenges so you can approach life with clarity, strength, and a renewed sense of possibility. You want to feel stronger, calmer, and more capable of handling whatever life throws your way, while honoring the whole person you are.
As a clinical social worker, I combine talk therapy with practical tools from CBT, mindfulness, and movement. I focus on the connection between mental health, education, and physical well-being to help you reconnect with your body and mind—so you can boost energy, focus, and resilience, and move forward feeling grounded and in control.
Taking the first step toward change can be daunting—but you don’t have to do it alone. I’ll meet you with warmth, curiosity, and respect for your unique story. Therapy with me is active and collaborative, a space to explore, grow, and deepen the mind-body connection as you build balance, resilience, and strength for the path ahead.

Clinical Game Changer
I’m a mental health counselor specializing in children and adolescents. I have experience working with clients who present anxiety, trauma, depression, stress, peer issues, bullying, academics, sports performance, and life transitions. I adapt therapy to each client’s strengths, interests and unique abilities to enhance their social and emotional growth.
I hope to provide a safe, supportive space to explore thoughts and feelings. It’s common to need extra support to manage life’s stressors. Therapy offers compassionate learning and nonjudgmental self discovery, in contrast to constant comparison and competition. Together, we’ll create goals centered on your needs and move at a pace that fits you.

Fee-for-Service Clinician
Starting therapy can feel daunting, but I am here to make the process feel more approachable. Together, we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you and focus on what matters most, helping you get what you truly hope for from therapy. You are not alone. I work with individuals and couples facing a wide range of challenges, from life transitions to emotional overwhelm to relationship concerns. Together, we’ll explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck and build greater clarity, resilience, and connection.
Using a relational approach grounded in attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Imago, I offer a supportive and nonjudgemental space where clients can grow.
I approach therapy from a systemic lens, understanding that our early experiences and relationships are deeply connected to how we see ourselves and relate to others today.
Matthew Heerema, LMHC
Fee-for-Service Clinician
I’m a licensed mental health counselor experienced in helping adults manage depression, anxiety, substance use, and PTSD. I take an empathic and integrative approach to therapy, meeting you where you’re at, addressing the goals that you set for yourself, and selecting therapeutic strategies based on your needs. I use cognitive/behavioral methods, motivational interviewing, humanistic and existential approaches, psychodynamic theories, and harm reduction for substance use. Theories aside, I believe that acceptance, love and courage heal.
In addition to working as a psychotherapist, I am a researcher and educator at Boston Medical Center’s Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance and have a weekend job/hobby as a florist.
I offer counseling online, with availability in the evening and early morning during the week, as well as most Saturday mornings. If you think we might be a good match, I invite you to reach out to chat!
Jalen Martinez
Clinical Game Changer
I help clients build self-awareness, confidence, emotional regulation, and healthy coping skills. I work with children, adolescents, and adults through developmentally appropriate play and talk therapy. I have experience supporting athletes navigating confidence, identity, pressure, and performance.
Starting therapy can feel difficult, especially when you’re not sure where to begin or whether therapy is right for you. You don’t have to have everything figured out before reaching out. I strive to create a warm, supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and accepted. If you’re ready to take that first step, I’d be happy to connect.
CLINICAL INTERNS
Every year, Doc Wayne onboards a new cohort of graduate students through our longstanding internship practicum program, providing invaluable experience and training to the next generation of clinicians through The Community Clinic and our Chalk Talk® Group Therapy program. Our graduate internship program serves to provide prospective social workers and clinicians with the knowledge and skills to support youth and adults in their mental health journeys both in our Allston-based clinic and onsite at schools.
